The School Board

The role of the School Board

The School Board is a legally formed body that, in partnership with the Principal, is given powers to set and monitor the key directions of a school. It is the major governing body of the school and oversees the school's performance.

School Board Terms of Reference

The Board is formed with the fundamental purpose of enabling parents, staff and members of the community to engage in activities that are in the best interests of students and which will ultimately enhance the quality of the Teaching and Learning program offered by the school.

School Board Roles and Responsibilities

The role of a School Board is outlined in the School Education Act 1999. In essence, the role of School Board is one of setting the long term future for the school and maintaining oversight (not management) of the school's operation. It is not about running the school - that is the job of the principal. It is about providing additional expertise to help the school achieve the best outcomes for the students.

2016 Department of Education Services (DES) Review

Under the IPS initiative, all schools are required to participate in an external review conducted by the Department of Education Services (DES). As an independent government department, DES conducts a review of each Independent Public School in the final year of its Delivery and Performance Agreement (DPA).

The independent review provides assurance to the community, the Director General of Education and the Minister for Education that the school has met the commitments outlined in its DPA and Business Plan.

The focus of the review is on:

  • How well the school has improved the standards of student learning (achievement, progress and engagement) for all students.

  • How well the school has created an environment that promotes student learning.

  • How well the school is placed to sustain and improve its performance.

DES works collaboratively with schools to provide an objective, independent verification of each school's self review of its performance against these documents. Under the DPA, the school is required to undertake regular self-assessment. The outcomes of these assessments forms the basis for the school's self-review.

In 2016, Mr John Garnaut, Ms Georgina Detiuk and Ms Joy Shepherd were commissioned by DES to undertake the independent review of MaylandsPeninsulaPrimary School. The findings of the DES review are outlined below.
