Sustainability

Maylands Peninsula Primary School places great importance on sustainable processes and practices within our school and the local community.

Our aim is to raise our students' awareness of environmental issues and empower them to make a difference as good global citizens.  As such, the school has implemented a number of initiatives and programs in order to make a real collective impact.

General Paper and Plastic recycling

All work spaces within the school have paper and plastic recycling bins.

Mobile School Recycling Station

In addition to our general plastic and paper recycling program, the school has created a mobile recycling station which allows the school community to recycle a variety of common household items which would usually end up in landfill.
Our recycling station collects bread tags, crayons and textas, plastic bottle tops, batteries, dishwashing and oral care products.

Sustainability Coordinator

The school is supported in its endeavours to 'do our bit' for the environment through the creation of the role of P&C Sustainability Coordinator. The Sustainability Coordinator liaises with various members of staff responsible for each of the sustainability initiatives undertaken by the school.

Schools Garden Project

In 2016, the school established a number of garden areas throughout the school for students to learn about all aspects of the garden cycle from preparing, planting, harvesting and collecting seed. Volunteers from the local community assist staff by working with small groups of students to tend to these areas. Produce harvested from the gardens and potted colour is sold by students on assembly days.

Composting

The school has purchased compost bins which will be used to collect fruit and vegetable waste to create compost for use in our school gardens and to feed our worm farm. The Worm Whizz collected from the worm farm is sold on assembly days.

Solar Panels

The school has a number of solar panels installed on the roof of the Administration Block to reduce our reliance on grid power.

Water Wise School

Maylands Peninsula Primary School is an accredited Water Wise School. As such, we provide teaching and learning experiences to educate our students about water conservation and sustainability.

Water Tanks

Two large capacity water tanks store water harvested off one of our teaching blocks. The harvested water is plumbed into our toilet cisterns to reduce our reliance on scheme water.
