Class Placement Policy

Purpose:

To ensure classes are formed in such a way as to best meet educational needs of students within the constraints of the resources provided.

Rationale:

Class placements are based on professional judgments about meeting a student's educational needs circumstances and interests.

Process:

  • The Leadership Team establishes class structure options for the following year based upon anticipated enrolments.
  • Parents/caregivers will be given the opportunity in Term 4 to provide written submissions with respect to class placements. The submissions must be based on educational reasons, addressed to 'The Principal' and marked 'Confidential'. Parents/caregivers will be made aware of this opportunity via the school newsletter.
  • All written parent/caregiver requests will be considered based on individual and school needs.  It is important to note that parent/caregiver contact with the school will not guarantee student placement in a particular class, and as a school management issue, student placement remains a staff and Leadership Team decision. Furthermore, requests in relation to choice of teacher will not be considered as a placement factor.
  • The staff members, currently teaching particular cohorts, confer regarding placements for the following year, taking into consideration the criteria listed below:
  • Classes are to be homogeneous with respect academic performance, gender, behaviour, work habits, social networks and the specific needs of each child.
    • 'Special Requests', such as placement of twins/siblings, custody issues or the like.
    • School Psychologist recommendations.
    • Written parent/caregiver submissions regarding a student's educational needs.

Composite Classes: will be formed giving consideration to:

  • Independent students.
  • Student emotional maturity and behaviour.
  • Social development.
  • Social networks.
  • Previous class placements - Where possible students should not to be placed in composite classes in consecutive years.
  • 'Special Requests', such as placement of twins/siblings, custody issues or the like.
  • School Psychologist recommendations.
  • Written parent/caregiver submissions regarding a student's educational needs.

Lists will be submitted to the Leadership Team for final ratification. Lists will be published on the School Development Day just prior to students attending for the first time to cater for last minute enrolments and departures.
